Inductee to the Polo Hall of Fame

Harry Payne Whitney
Elected April 6, 1990

In 1908, Harry Payne Whitney took on the task of organizing the first American Team to win the Westchester Cup versus England the following year. He chose the best players for the team, assembled a great string of ponies and devised the teamwork and strategy. The result revolutionized polo and made it the fast, fluid and exciting game it is today.

According to Devereux Milburn, he was a great player and an inspiring captain. It would be impossible to overestimate the debt that American polo owes this ten goal player.
